Head Lice Information

As a reminder, here is a review of certain best practices regarding head lice.  Each school year, a number of our students will experience head lice, which is considered a “nuisance condition” by the Michigan Department of Community Health.  The Michigan Head Lice Manual, co-published by the Department of Education and the Michigan Department of Community Health (August 2013 Revision), guides school policies and practices regarding head lice and is a great resource for parents/guardians.

The number one recommendation for parents/guardians is to check your child’s head weekly for lice and/or nits.  Discovering head lice early can often greatly lessen the burden of dealing with it.  Since direct head-to-head contact is required for transmission, increases in cases of head lice often follow sleep-overs, extended family gatherings, and other activities where children are likely to engage in play that involves head-to-head contact. If you don’t already have the practice of checking your child built into your weekly routines I would encourage you to consider starting as this is an issue that can occur throughout the school year.

The Michigan Head Lice Manual is a useful resource and addresses a number of harmful myths and misinformation surrounding head lice.  It is important to have factual information, please review the Myths and Facts page for more information. While dealing with head lice is not fun for anyone involved, please remember that lice do not jump, fly, and only survive for a short time away from a human head.

This is a transformational year for the performing arts in all our schools. In response to a request from the district, the Foundation is providing nearly $100,000 this school year to support a new drama director at the high school, production expenses, and performances for the middle school and all three elementary school plays.

Thank you, Foundation donors, for helping provide this opportunity for all our students to participate in these productions!

If you want to help give our students opportunity, you can give to the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation today.

For more than 40 years, the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation has been providing opportunity. Thanks to our donors, we fund vital school programs and classroom enhancements at every school and every grade level.

We offer our students opportunity not only in reading, writing, science, and math, but also in the fine arts and performing arts, world languages, robotics, athletics, Innovation Lab, Gone Boarding, mental health resources, and so much more. We support our students in nearly everything they do.

None of that would be possible without donors like you.

Today, you have a new opportunity. It's your opportunity to help the next generation of Pioneers reach their full potential. And it's your opportunity to support public education in our community.

Let's give our students that opportunity, together.

Please give to the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation today.

Program Highlights

5th Grade Kindness Community

First Day of School
Student Leaders

At Breton Downs, fifth grade student leaders teach K-4th grade students the importance of kindness and giving back to the community. Each year, the Fifth Grade Kindness Community nominates a community organization to raise money for and creates a craft to teach the school about that organization.

We are so proud of these student leaders!

Camp Miniwanca

Camp Miniwanca

Breton Downs fifth-grade students start the year with an overnight experience at Camp Miniwanca in Shelby, MI. In addition to experiencing hands-on science lessons, students also bond together through team-building challenges, nature hikes and canoeing, and all the challenges that make up a classic camp adventure. The interpersonal threads that tie together on this trip bind Breton Downs fifth graders for the rest of their final year of elementary school, and beyond.

Elementary Musical

Elementary Musical

The elementary musical is a very special opportunity in which every student can be involved! Students in grades K-1 are able to learn a song and dance and perform live on stage at the start of the show. Second graders have the added opportunity to make a cameo appearance. Students in grades 3-5 may showcase their singing and acting skills on stage or work behind the scenes helping with costumes, artwork, setting the stage, lights and sound, directing peers, and more! This is a wonderful opportunity for the entire Breton Downs Elementary school community to work and grow together!

BRAVO! Fundraiser

Bravo! is a fun-filled night out for parents that directly supports our students as the largest fundraiser for the Breton Downs PTO. Parents come together for appetizers, drinks, games, auctions, raffles and live entertainment! This is a great community-builder for the families of Breton Downs students.
